The Catacombs of San Gennaro guided tour: what to expect

What you actually see
The tour moves through two stacked levels carved into the soft volcanic tufa. The lower catacomb grew up around the tomb of an early bishop and was enlarged after San Gennaro — Naples’ patron saint — was buried here in the 5th century. The upper level holds the oldest images: early-Christian and Byzantine frescoes, mosaics, and the oldest known portrait of San Gennaro, painted within a century of his death. You’ll also see the vast Basilica Adiecta and the bishops’ crypt.
How the visit works
- Arrive about 15 minutes early at the ticket office on Via Capodimonte, beside the Basilica del Buon Consiglio.
- Tours leave at fixed times in English and Italian — your slot is on your confirmation.
- A guide leads the whole group; the pace is gentle and the floor is even and step-free.
- The tour ends back near the entrance after about an hour. Add the San Gaudioso combo to see the second catacomb.
What to wear and bring
What works
- A light sweater or jacket — it’s cool underground all year
- Comfortable, flat shoes for the tufa floor
- Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) — it’s a sacred site
- Your booking confirmation, on your phone is fine
Worth knowing
- You may not touch the tombs, bones or frescoes
- No eating, drinking or smoking inside
- Large bags and tripods are discouraged
- Flash photography is not allowed
Is it suitable for everyone?
Yes — uniquely among catacombs of this kind, the whole route is wheelchair accessible, with no steps and no claustrophobic squeezes. The galleries are wide and well lit, so it suits older visitors and families with children too.
Book an English-language morning slot if you can — they’re calmer, and you’ll have the frescoes to yourselves before the midday groups arrive.

Frequently asked questions
Can you visit the Catacombs of San Gennaro without a guide?
No — for preservation, the catacombs can only be seen on a guided tour. Tours run roughly every hour in English and Italian and last about 60 minutes.
How long does the San Gennaro tour take?
About one hour. If you add the San Gaudioso combo, allow around two hours in total plus a short walk between the two sites.
Is the tour scary or claustrophobic?
Not really. The galleries are unusually wide, high and well lit — more like underground basilicas than tight tunnels — and the route is completely step-free.
Can children go on the tour?
Yes. The gentle, accessible route and the storytelling guides make it one of the more family-friendly things to do in Naples. Touching the tombs and bones is not allowed.
