What to wear to the Catacombs of San Gennaro

What to wear, season by season
The temperature underground barely changes, so the surprise is usually in summer: you can leave 30°C heat outside and step into a cool 14°C gallery. In July and August, carry a light layer you can throw on at the entrance. In winter, the catacombs can actually feel milder than the street — a normal jacket is plenty. There is no rain to worry about inside, but the short walk from the ticket office is open-air.
Footwear and floors
The floor is carved tufa and paving, even and well lit, with no steps and no slippery squeezes. Trainers, flat boots or any comfortable closed shoe are ideal. Heels are awkward on the slightly uneven stone, so leave them for dinner in the Rione Sanità afterwards.
Dress code: is there one?
There is no strict enforced dress code, but the catacombs are a Christian burial site and an active place of devotion, so visitors are asked to dress respectfully — think the same modesty you would bring to a church, with shoulders and knees covered. Vests, very short shorts and swimwear are out of place. Beyond that, comfort wins.
Pop your light layer in a small bag rather than tying it round your waist — the galleries are narrow in places and it’s easier to keep bags compact.
That’s really all the preparation you need. Once you’re dressed for a cool hour underground, book a guided tour and you’re set.
Frequently asked questions
How cold is it inside the Catacombs of San Gennaro?
The catacombs stay a steady 12–15°C (about 54–59°F) all year round, so they feel cool even on a hot Naples summer day. A light sweater or jacket is the one thing worth bringing.
Is there a dress code for the catacombs?
There is no strictly enforced dress code, but as a sacred burial site the catacombs ask visitors to dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered, as you would in a church. Otherwise wear whatever is comfortable.
What shoes should I wear?
Flat, comfortable closed shoes such as trainers. The floor is even, paved and step-free, so you don’t need hiking boots — just skip the heels.
